McLaren Could Hook Back Up With Honda Down The Road

http://www.carscoops.com/2017/12/mclaren-c...with-honda.html

Given how things turned out between McLaren and Honda, you'd think the prospect of the two ever partnering again would be completely out of the question. But the team's executive director Zak Brown says otherwise.

"We are grateful to Honda,” said Brown in a television interview with Sky Sports (as cited by The Drive). “They're a great company, with great people, and the relationship was always strong. The relationship still is strong.”

“Wouldn't rule out racing with them again, wish them the best but we needed to make some tough decisions to do what's in our best interest.” Seriously? "Oh of course, absolutely," confirmed Brown.

This after three years of frustrations that saw McLaren saddled by an underperforming and unreliable Honda engine package that's largely blamed for the team's poor performance. In fact, these past three seasons have been the worst in McLaren's history since the late 1970s and early 1980s, before (now ousted chairman) Ron Dennis took over and ushered the team into the second most accomplished in the Formula One record books.

That includes a previous partnership in the late 1980s and early 90s that yielded four consecutive world championships with drivers like Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost behind the wheel. Maybe it's those glory days to which Brown is looking back. But for now, McLaren's moving on to Renault power, leaving Honda to work out the kinks with Toro Rosso instead.

http://www.automarket.ro/formula1/primul-p...tele-81883.html

Collisions Galore: Relive The 10 Most Dramatic Moments Of F1 2017

http://www.carscoops.com/2017/12/collision...ve-10-most.html

With 20 races on the calendar, it can be hard to catch each Grand Prix live. And even if you do, the most dramatic moments can quite literally pass you by in the blink of an eye.

Fortunately the organizers of the Formula One World Championship have compiled the best bits of action into this four-minute clip.

The highlights reel includes the first-lap carnage in Canada, the collision between the two Red Bulls in Hungary, Romain Grosjean running over a manhole cover in Malaysia, and Valtteri Bottas passing Lance Stroll at the finish line in Azerbaijan.

We also see both Ferraris puncturing their tires in Britain, Vettel and Stroll colliding (also) in Malaysia, Button flipping Pascal Wehrlein onto his side in Monaco, Vettel bumping into Hamilton in Azerbaijan (again), Verstappen's contested last-lap move on Raikkonen in Austin, and the starting-line carnage in Singapore.

Those top ten moments were voted on by fans, so if you've got beef with the choices, you can rant out the window... or tell us what they missed in the comments section below.

Mercedes Wanted To Rekindle McLaren Partnership In Formula 1

http://www.carscoops.com/2017/12/mercedes-...le-mclaren.html

(IMG:https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kaumeeOcV_k/WkiVPn0qleI/AAAAAAAAsYc/SwibFAurU948aR9iBSUPOag5RV20gGP4wCLcBGAs/s1600/mclaren-mercedes.jpg)

Once McLaren determined that it was time to move on from its troubled relationship with Honda, it looked at all the options, including teaming back up with Mercedes. In the end, it chose Renault's powertrains, which, according to Mercedes motorsport chief Toto Wolff, is a shame..

"We wanted to give McLaren an engine," Wolff told ESPN, according to AutoWeek. "The problem is that it dragged on for a long time and we just didn't have the structure in place and the capacity to supply them an engine for 2018. It was simply too late."

The implication is that Mercedes took too long in working out a deal. But that doesn't mean they couldn't come together again at some point down the line, just as McLaren could with Honda. "You must never rule out supplying anybody in the future," said Wolff, "and this is why McLaren or anyone else in the future could be a partner."

McLaren held the place of honor as Mercedes' factory-backed team of choice for some 20 years, yielding 76 checkered flags, two drivers' championships and one constructors' title, plus the the road-going SLR supercar. The partnership started to unravel after Mercedes took over the Honda/Brawn team in 2010, and ended completely in 2015 when McLaren rekindled its past relationship with Honda as an engine supplier. However, unlike the previous partnership, which lasted from 1988 to 1993 and was a huge success with four consecutive drivers' and team's championships, this time around it was a disaster, hence its early termination.

Renault's RS18 F1 Car Should Look This Cool

http://www.carscoops.com/2018/01/renaults-...-look-this.html

(IMG:https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HacKBDmLnuk/Wk0S8_bMg3I/AAAAAAAAsr4/BvHrhi8u2t4XVQSYmbQ0h8OfLDSFIQWwACLcBGAs/s1600/renault-rs18-sean-bull-livery.jpg)

Remember what we said about the shame of Renault ditching the Lotus/JPS livery? Yeah, we take it back. This looks cooler.

It's Sean Bull's latest project, previewing what the Anglo-French team's upcoming RS18 could – and probably should – look like. And we're smitten.

The design, as you can see, adopts Renault's signature yellow and black color scheme, but mattes out the black, and blings out the yellow to a nice deep (and shiny) gold – not unlike the approach rival Peugeot has taken with some of its concepts and hot hatches.

The form also predicts the shape next year's F1 cars could take, complete with the halo cockpit protection device. With or without it, the matte black and gold has us forgetting all about whatever Lotus had cooking for those few years when the team raced under its banner.

Which F1 Teams Would Be Lining Up For Aston Martin Engines?

http://www.carscoops.com/2018/01/which-f1-...ing-up-for.html

(IMG:https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mFqqiyCk0dM/WkyX8BCS7II/AAAAAAAAsnA/pZDXvC90Mn8DXs7n8RAFG8BLI-7GLxaiQCLcBGAs/s1600/aston-f1-engine-customers.jpg)

Aston Martin has made no secret of its desire to enter Formula One as an engine supplier, should the next set of rules suit its ambitions. If and when it does, it could have several customer teams lined up.

Red Bull Racing, with which Aston is already partnered on multiple fronts, would be the natural choice – especially given the team's dissatisfaction with its current Renault engine package.

Autosport points out that Toro Rosso could easily follow suit, especially if its new Honda deal doesn't work out any better than it did with McLaren. But that there are other independent teams that have expressed interest as well.

Ferrari, Mercedes, and Renault all manufacture their own engines, but McLaren, Force India, Haas, Sauber, and Williams (in addition to the two Red Bull teams) source theirs from suppliers. Given their close relationships with Ferrari, it would be hard to imagine Haas or Sauber jumping ship. And given their rivalry on road cars, McLaren might not be too eager to team up with Aston either.

Williams and Force India could be prime candidates for the new engine package, though getting them to jump ship from the successful Mercedes power under which they currently run could prove a challenge.

The bigger question, perhaps, is how Aston would develop the F1 engines. It would be highly ambitious for it to undertake the endeavor entirely in-house, and Mercedes-AMG might not prove as eager to help this time as it did with its road-car powerplants. It could, however, partner again with Cosworth, like it did on the Valkyrie's engine, and make good use of the engine constructor's extensive experience in F1.

http://www.automarket.ro/formula1/romania-...icio-81983.html

F1 Could Return To The Nürburgring Next Year

http://www.carscoops.com/2018/01/f1-could-...-next-year.html

Races come and races go from the Formula One calendar, but next year the series could return to the Nürburgring.

Not to the Nordschleife, mind you – which hasn't hosted a grand prix since 1976 – but to the adjoining GP-Strecke.

Those who've followed the status of the German Grand Prix will know that it had bounced between Hockenheim and the Nürburgring for years. But its place on the calendar fell into jeopardy recently as the more famous of the two fell on hard times financially.

While Hockenheim has held up its end, hosting the race in 2014 and 2016, the races that would have been held at the Nürburgring were canceled in 2015 and 2017. The last time F1 visited the Nürburgring was in 2013.

Hockenheim will host the race again this year, though. And now that the 'Ring is under new management, talks have been taking place to bring the series back, which could happen as early as next year.

"We really would appreciate to have the Formula 1 back at the Nürburgring in 2019," the circuit's new CEO Mirco Markfort told Motorsport.com. "This will only be possible if we take meaningful economic surrounding conditions into consideration. We are able to confirm that there had been conversations with the owner of the Formula 1, Liberty Media."

The Nürburgring may face some stiff competition, though. US-based Liberty Media is reportedly even more keen on holding another race in America than Bernie Ecclestone and CVC were, with Las Vegas, Miami, and New York said to be in contention. All told, Liberty is said to have received expressions of interest from as many as 40 potential new venues.

http://www.automarket.ro/formula1/sistemul...utea-82045.html

(IMG:http://static.automarket.ro/img/auto_resized/db/article/082/045/519247l-610x390-b-bd04b880.jpg)

http://www.automarket.ro/formula1/formula-...rele-82075.html

(IMG:http://static.automarket.ro/img/auto_resized/db/article/082/075/285424l-610x390-b-08be44bf.jpg)

Ferrari Picks Up Red Bull Reject Daniil Kvyat

http://www.carscoops.com/2018/01/ferrari-p...ect-daniil.html

(IMG:https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KVSdIQGKesM/Wlcaf2VVJ6I/AAAAAAAAtRk/lZPD3OBletE5kAln0yOviptDzCakDuekACLcBGAs/s1600/daniil-kvyat.jpg)

Daniil Kvyat may have been kicked out of the Red Bull family, but his career in Formula One may not be over yet. At least, not entirely.

According to Autosport, the Russian driver has been picked up by Ferrari – not for a race seat, mind you, but as a development driver.

Once a promising prospect, Kvyat proved his worth on his way up the ladder, winning titles in Formula Renault 2.0 and GP3. He debuted as a test driver at the final grands prix of 2013 with Toro Rosso and got the race seat the next season, where he showed form impressive enough to get promoted to the front-running Red Bull team to replace Sebastian Vettel in 2015.

A second-place finish that season in Hungary and another podium in China early the next weren't enough to keep his seat, though, so he was bumped back down to Toro Rosso mid-season, switching seats with Max Verstappen. His performance has continued to drop off ever since, to the point that he was replaced mid-season again, losing out to Pierre Gasly and Brandon Hartley for a seat next season.

Kvyat reportedly approached Williams about the last vacancy on the grid, but that's now believed to go to his less experienced countryman Sergey Sirotkin. The deal that Kvyat has hammered out with Ferrari instead will likely see him working the simulator in Maranello, but could put him behind the wheel on an actual track at official test sessions or Friday practices – or even, potentially, stepping in for Vettel or Raikkonen should the need arise (as it did following Felipe Massa's injury in 2009).

McLaren Exec Says 2018 F1 Car Will Undergo Biggest Changes On The Grid

http://www.carscoops.com/2018/01/mclaren-e...1-car-will.html

(IMG:https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uPQZzqAmC7g/WlToUO85l4I/AAAAAAABRxo/KQDHeOjtvVQW_7kCEe1PfBQvge1j7L2CwCLcBGAs/s1600/f1-mclaren-big-changes-2018-8.jpg)

McLaren Racing executive director Zak Brown revealed to Autosport that the British outfit's 2018 challenger will feature the most changes out of all the teams.

"The car's not going to look the same as last year. Our whole brand, the visibility of McLaren, is going to go to the next level and it's going to be exciting", Brown said. "We know what a lot of the other teams are going to look like, but hopefully people will see the biggest change on and off the track at McLaren going into Australia."

He added that McLaren has signed three additional sponsors for 2018 and that there's still some work to be done on the papaya orange livery. He also mentioned that the team's fresh new look will carry over to the garage as well, helping them stand out from the rest of the field.

"Going through that exercise developed a plan that doesn't require a 'title partner'", he commented. "It still requires a 'principal partner', just not a 'title partner'. I know that's semantics there but it's really about protecting the McLaren name. That's all I'm trying to do is ringfence that and keep us as McLaren."

Apparently, Brown also believes that when a sponsor's name becomes part of the team's name, it "slightly diminishes the value of the name of the team."

http://www.automarket.ro/formula1/formula-...tart-82139.html

(IMG:http://static.automarket.ro/img/auto_resized/db/article/082/139/203887l-610x390-b-129b09d2.jpg)

Williams Signs Sergey Sirotkin For 2018, Robert Kubica As Test Driver

http://www.carscoops.com/2018/01/williams-...n-for-2018.html

(IMG:https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7cmokAn2WKA/Wl4zxIFvDFI/AAAAAAAAuDU/reLFMtF-OZw-fzp8YzuPyVIJ7-TbwnAQwCLcBGAs/s1600/williams-drivers-2018.jpg)

With every other team having confirmed their driver rosters for next season, Williams Martini Racing was the last piece of the puzzle. But it's now announced its lineup as well, ending the game of musical chairs that precedes every new racing season.

For 2018, Williams has selected newcomer Sergey Sirotkin to succeed the retiring Felipe Massa and drive alongside Lance Stroll, who in turn was a rookie just last season. That gives the team a pretty young lineup, with Sirotkin 22 years old and Stroll still just 19.

The Russian rookie showed early promise when he won the Formula Abarth European Series title in 2011 before going on to win races in Formula Renault 3.5 and GP2. He's since served as a test driver for both Sauber and Renault.

Sirotkin won out for the race seat over Robert Kubica, who will serve as the team's test/reserve driver. The now 33-year-old Pole also drove for Sauber and Renault in years past, but as a full-fledged racing driver. He even won the Canadian Grand Prix in 2008, but had his career put on hold when he was severely injured in a rallying accident in 2011.

He's since been working his way back into motorsports – mostly competing in top-level rallies. Last year he partook in F1 test sessions with both Renault and Williams, where his performance impressed enough to land him the test-driver role, though not a race seat... just yet.

Are Any American Drivers Ready For F1? Haas Chief Doesn't Think So

http://www.carscoops.com/2018/01/are-any-a...ady-for-f1.html

(IMG:https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-M3hS-mowzQw/WlsN63K1nKI/AAAAAAAAtY4/U0Wco5QrIIs9DbP6o_w1kAYvg-B0I6m-QCLcBGAs/s1600/haas-min.jpg)

Formula One is now owned by an American company, has an American team on the grid, and an American race on the calendar – and it's eager to add more. So will an American driver be next?

Not just yet, says Haas team principal Gunther Steiner. It “would be an ambition, but at the moment there is nobody ready for F1 in the United States in my opinion."

Asked by Autosport if the US-based team is interested in adding an American driver to its roster in the near future, Steiner said, "It's not on top of our list. It's on top of our list if there's a good one. Obviously, we want one.” But "Just having an American driver who maybe cannot compete at a certain level is maybe not good for the sport.”

The last American driver to compete in a grand prix was Alexander Rossi, a now 26-year-old Californian who won titles in Formula BMW, finished second in GP2 (now F2), test-drove for Caterham in F1, and contested five races (without a point to show for it) for Manor/Marussia. He then went on to win the Indianapolis 500 in 2016.

He was the first American to race in F1 since Scott Speed, who also failed to score a single championship point in two years on the grid with Toro Rosso. He's since gone on to win three back-to-back titles in the Global RallyCross Championship.

The only F1 world champions to hail from the United States have been Mario Andretti and Phil Hill. Most of the other Americans to have raced in Formula One competed when the Indy 500 was counted as part of the championship.

For its part, Haas seems content with its current lineup. The team has retained French driver Romain Grosjean for a third season and Denmark's Kevin Magnussen for a second, both having driven for more established teams before coming to Haas. "They are both worthy of staying," said Steiner. "Do either of them want to stay? That's the next thing. There is a lot of factors which come into that. People want to say we take somebody else, but no. We're not. We are fine.”

McLaren Has Successfully Integrated Renault's Power Unit Into 2018 F1 Car

http://www.carscoops.com/2018/01/mclaren-h...integrated.html

(IMG:https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZcprX-MeVBI/Wl9t6ABYhqI/AAAAAAABSkA/YP5p_i9TpUIyt0kmjGj2SWuxPr2uRWH-wCLcBGAs/s1600/f1-mclaren-renault-packaging-resolved-6.jpg)

McLaren Racing has succeeded in overcoming initial packaging headaches caused by Renault's fundamentally different engine architecture.

According to the British team's technical director Tim Goss, McLaren managed to integrate the new engine architecture into the new car without compromising the chassis design.

"The Renault architecture is very different," said Goss in an interview with Autosport. "You have to fundamental engine architectures out there. You have the Mercedes/Honda approach, and you have got the Ferrari/Renault approach."

The difference between the two comes down to the positioning of the turbocharger, where Mercedes and Honda engines have the compressor out in front, the turbo in the back and the MGU-H in the middle, while Ferrari and Renault position the compressor in the back, the MGU-H behind it and the turbo behind that.

"We had to reconfigure the chassis, change the cooling system and reconfigure the gearbox to make it fit," added Goss, before explaining that the Renault engine will sit further forward in the chassis.

"With the Honda you had the air intake that had to come down into the front of the engine, and that volume came out of your fuel cell. So as a result, the chassis was longer. But then what you hadn't got was a turbocharger sat off the back of the engine, which then gets in the way of your inboard suspension."

"When you move to a Renault, suddenly the front of the engine becomes a lot simpler and as a result we win back a substantial amount of fuel volume. You can push the engine forwards and the aerodynamic blockage of the engine and exhaust is considerably better, because that has moved forwards behind the chassis."

Having all these issues sorted is most definitely a huge positive for McLaren, who will be looking to challenge the likes of Red Bull and Force India this year.

http://www.automarket.ro/formula1/concuren...2018-82231.html

(IMG:http://static.automarket.ro/img/auto_resized/db/article/082/231/788198l-610x390-b-57297a43.jpg)

Toro Rosso's New Honda-Powered STR13 Would Look Cool In Chrome

http://www.carscoops.com/2018/01/toro-ross...ered-str13.html

(IMG:https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-36KMsEHvaMQ/Wl8evo1lk3I/AAAAAAAAuHc/z6rhZTLXDYgm9fUbesGsbW_MWDjqc4OAACLcBGAs/s1600/toro-rosso-str13-honda-seanbull.jpg)

The participating teams will start unveiling their new F1 cars for 2018 in the coming weeks and months. But before they do, we have at least one more independent design to show you.

What we have here is a proposal for the forthcoming Toro Rosso STR13, done up by livery designer Sean Bull – complete with halo cockpit protection device, and all decked out in chrome (with some matte black detailing thrown in for contrast).

The appearance is an approach we last saw from McLaren, which abandoned the reflective coating for black (and then for orange) after it parted ways with Mercedes and embarked on its ill-fated partnership with Honda.

Now that Toro Rosso has picked up the Japanese engines instead, switching to a flashier livery could be just the ticket. But as cool as it looks here, we wouldn't count on the “other Scuderia” adopting this approach for the coming year.

http://www.automarket.ro/formula1/formula-...rile-82263.html

(IMG:http://static.automarket.ro/img/auto_resized/db/article/082/263/481023l-610x390-b-3a779a16.jpg)

Mercedes Boss Says He Wants More Competition In F1

http://www.carscoops.com/2018/01/mercedes-...wants-more.html

Daimler boss Dieter Zetsche has admitted that he wants to see greater competition in Formula One.

Speaking during the Detroit Auto Show to Autocar, Zetsche said that the sport’s solution to improve competition shouldn’t involve penalizing Mercedes, but instead aiding other manufacturers in achieving greater on-track performance.

“To be clear, we want to be successful and we want the platform to be successful and when one is dominant that doesn’t help. We need stronger competitors and rule changes which give new cars to everybody and,to some extent, this last season was that change,” Zetsche said.

It isn’t just on the circuit where Zetsche believes Formula One could be improved; he also believes there are innovative ways to engage fans that need to be leveraged.

“I think it is a pretty good show but there’s potential. I think on the digital side point of side much more can be leveraged. There should be opportunities to engage fans, for example, you could sit in your living room and try out for a team on your screen, and try to beat the other teams virtually,” he said.

F1 Meets The NFL Ahead Of Jaguars’ Big Playoffs Game

https://www.carscoops.com/2018/01/f1-meets-...of-jaguars-big/

If NFL football and Formula 1 are your two favorite sports, then we suggest you try this little digital nugget on for size.

While it may not be the first time we’ve seen a sports team-inspired livery on a Formula 1 car, thanks to Andy Werner, we finally have an NFL team on four wheels, a team that has a chance to do something very special this year.

The Jaguars already made it past the Buffalo Bills in the Wild Car round, and then the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Divisional round. The Pats however are on a whole different level.

As for the Formula 1 aspect of these drawings, it’s not like it’s weird to see ‘Jaguars’ on the side of a car (well, minus the plural factor). The livery also features Nike as a sponsor, the NFL badge and the AFC Conference logo on the side of the rear wing.

But what do you think about the black, green and gold theme?
