Can’t Afford Senna’s McLaren? Try This 1999 Jordan F1 Instead

Well-off Formula 1 fans might be enticed to bid on the McLaren or Toleman that Ayrton Senna drove in the Monaco Grand Prix, as both are coming up for auction in Monaco next month. But for those interested in acquiring a vintage F1 car of their own, yet can’t quite stretch to one of Senna’s cars, this might be the next best thing.

At the same event, RM Sotheby’s will auction off this Jordan 199. It’s the very car in which Heinz-Harald Frentzen took two podium finishes in the 1999 World Championship. Those spectacular (for an independent team) results helped Frenzten seal third place in the drivers’ standings that year, and the same for the team in the constructors’ championship.

Jordan’s Best Car
Standing out in its yellow and black Benson & Hedges livery, the Jordan 199 packs a 3.0-liter V10 built by Mugen-Honda in one of F1’s most exciting eras. This was the third chassis built, and only ever finished on the podium, behind Eddie Irvine’s Ferrari in Australia, and behind Mika Hakkinen’s McLaren and Michael Schumacher’s Ferrari in Brazil. It was the best season out of the 15 in which Jordan competed before it was sold to Midland, then to Spyker and eventually to Force India. And none of those teams have repeated this car’s success.

After those races, chassis #3 is believed to have been retired, never to race again. But if you place the right bid, you could be driving it in an historic racing series like BOSS GP, where F1 cars from the 1990s and 2000s can still stretch their legs. There’s no telling how much it will sell for, but you can bet it will be much for affordable than any of Senna’s cars.

Ken Block has been known to hoon vehicles old and new, from classic Mustangs to fresh Fiestas. This one, though, falls somewhere in between.

The master showboater’s latest ride is a 1993 Escort RS Cosworth. We first caught glimpse of the restmodded machine, which is also one of the Blue Oval’s most legendary rally cars, last October, but now Ford Performance and the Hoonigan Racing Division have revealed it in its final livery.

It’s been specially created by Death Spray Custom, which previously worked on some of Block’s other cars and also designed his new racing suit. And along with it, Ford and Hoonigan have also announced what Block intends to do with his newest toy.

Fans can look forward to seeing the Cossie in action at four rallycross events across America. Block will be behind the wheel for three American Rallycross rounds (in Austin, Canada, and one in between) as well as the World Rallycross Championship event at that same circuit in Texas.

He’ll also field a 2017-spec M-Sport Fiesta RS at the WRC rally of Spain in October and he’ll be on hand for a handful of Gymkhana GRID events in the US and abroad, too. Plus we can look forward to Gymkhana Ten to drop later this year and a new eight-part documentary series called The Gymkhana Files to air on Amazon Prime.

“I’m legitimately excited about my calendar for this season,” said Block. “I’ve really enjoyed the past few years of rallycross, but I started my race career with rally and my heart has always been with it, so to be able to get back into doing events like these while still doing some rallycross makes me very happy!”

Noua generație Bentley Continental GT3 va debuta în acest weekend pe circuitul de la Monza, Italia. Versiunea de circuit are un motor V8 biturbo de 4.0 litri care produce peste 550 de cai putere.

Primele imagini cu noul Bentley Continental GT3 au fost publicate la finalul anului trecut. Dar debutul pe circuit va avea loc weekend-ul acesta la Monza, Italia.

Bentley Team M-Sport concurează în etapa de trei ore din cadrul Blancpain GT Series Endurance Cup cu două exemplare Continental GT3. Guy Smith, Steven Kane și Jules Gounon vor pilota exemplarul cu numărul 8 de concurs, iar Andy Soucek, Maxime Soulet și Vincent Abril vor putea fi văzuți la bordul mașinii cu numărul 7 de concurs.

Britanicii au reușit să scadă masa totală a modelului destinat circuitelor de la 2.250 de kilograme (versiunea de stradă) la mai puțin de 1.300 de kilograme. Așa cum era de așteptat, inginerii au mizat pe elemente de caroserie din fibră de carbon, dar și pe un interior dedicat exclusiv competițiilor.

Sub capota lui Continental GT3 se află un motor V8 biturbo de 4.0 litri care produce peste 550 de cai putere. Suspensia, sistemul de frânare și cel de evacuare au fost modificate și gândite special pentru un vehicul de circuit.

Ex-Formula One racer Mark Webber and tennis ace Maria Sharapova recently jumped into the driver’s seat of a yellow Porsche 911 GT2 RS to experience the car and scare each other to death.

Unveiled in the middle of last year, the GT2 RS the most powerful road car to ever wear the famous 911 badge and holds the Nurburgring Nordschleife production lap record with a blistering 6:47 lap. For almost anyone that holds a driver’s license, the RS offers simply out-of-this-world performance.

However, for a racing expert like Mark Webber, driving one is simply another day in the office.

The Australian played a part in the development of the car and is very familiar with the way it handles and the performance it provides. By comparison, Maria Sharapova isn’t as experienced behind the wheel but has driven some serious metal in the past thanks to her role as a Porsche ambassador.

Powering the 911 is a 3.8-liter twin-turbo flat-six engine delivering 690 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. This engine is mated exclusively to a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission that allows the car to hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in a blistering 2.8 seconds. With enough room, the car will keep on accelerating until 212 mph (340 km/h).

Other key components of the car include its rear-wheel steering, variable locking rear differential, various lightweight components, and custom aero parts.

Trofeul Serus de la Rasnov a fost o etapa de acomodare a pilotului bucurestean cu noul automobil Mitsubishi Lancer EVO X, reusind in antrenamente sa ocupe pozitia secunda la grupa N. Dupa mansele de concurs, Nicolae a terminat prima etapa pe pozitia a 3-a a podiumului, obtinand un rezultat peste asteptari la volanul unei noi masini.

"Ma bucur ca am reusit ocuparea unei pozitii pe podium, chiar daca inca nu m-am acomodat cu noua masina. Cu siguranta, in etapele urmatoare voi fi mai rapid si voi invata comportamentul masinii de concurs in cele mai mici detalii, luptandu-ma pentru locul 1 la grupa N" spune Ion Nicolae la sfarsitul etapei de la Rasnov.

Pe langa masina, pilotul Nicolae a mai avut parte de o noutate. E vorba de lubrifiantii Polytron care au fost utilizati in toate elementele automobilului, de la motor si transmisie, pana la diferentiale. "Numai atunci cand conduci la viteze mari si motorul este pus la sarcini extreme poti testa cu adevarat eficienta unui ulei auto si daca poate face fata temperaturilor si fortelor de frecare uriase. Dupa aceasta etapa in care am fortat masina pot spune ca uleiurile Polytron au trecut cu brio testul" mai adauga Nicolae.

Pilotul bucurestean va lua startul pe 19-20 mai la Teliu, acolo unde are loc a doua etapa din CNVC 2018, Trofeul Teliu.

Red Bull Global RallyCross Championship Shuts Down Ahead Of 2018 Season

Were you looking forward to catching a piece of the rallycross action at event near you this season? Well we’re afraid we have some bad news. The Red Bull Global RallyCross Championship has closed down.

The news was broken by Lancaster National Speedway. The track near Buffalo in upstate New York was supposed to host the season opener. But according to the facility’s management, “the Red Bull Global Rallycross organization has ceased operations for the 2018 season and the event scheduled for Lancaster on June 9-10 has been canceled,” adding that “Global Rallycross will be issuing refunds to anyone that already purchased tickets for the event.”

The series website is down and no updates have been made to its social media feeds. But as Autosport notes, the development has been looming on the horizon. Several of the participating manufacturers abandoned the series and its top Supercars class at the end of last season. Honda was the first to leave, followed by Volkswagen and Subaru, due to disagreements with series organizers.

Could Be Back In 2019

The Global RallyCross Championship started in 2009 and has competed primarily in the United States. Scott Speed and Tanner Foust have won the bulk of the championship titles to date.

If all goes well, the series may very well return in 2019. But in the meantime, rallycross fans will have to look elsewhere. Fortunately there are other series to check out.

Chief among them is the FIA World Rallycross Championship, which draws participation from several major automakers. It’s based principally in Europe but will be holding rounds at the Circuit of the Americas in Texas and Trois-Rivieres in Quebec this season. Its organizers have also formed an Americas Rallycross series to rival the now-defunct GRC. And the GRC’s European spin-off does not appear to be affected by the latest developments.

Omologarea noului Volkswagen Polo GTI R5 a fost amânată până în 1 octombrie. Deși testele și feedback-ul sunt bune, oficialii Volkswagen Motorsport vor să aducă o serie de modificări. Noul Polo GTI R5 va putea fi admirat pentru prima dată în Raliului Spaniei, etapa din Campionatul Mondial care se desfășoară în intervalul 25-28 octombrie.


La finalul anului trecut, Volkswagen a prezentat noul Polo GTI R5. Modelul dedicat raliurilor a fost dezvoltat ca o alternativă pentru piloții privați care își doresc o mașină de top capabilă să concureze atât în grupa WRC2, cât și în campionatele naționale și regionale.

În momentul prezentării, oficialii constructorului german au anunțat că omologarea lui Polo GTI R5 va avea loc în vara acestui an, iar primele livrări vor începe în toamna lui 2018.

Acum, oficialii revin și spun că omologarea lui Polo GTI R5 va avea loc în 1 octombrie. În aceste condiții, debutul oficial în cadrul unei competiții a fost amânat și el până în 25 octombrie. Începând cu această dată și până în 28 octombrie, în Spania, are loc etapa de Campionat Mondial.

"Polo GTI R5 a trecut cu bine de testele inițiale, iar feedback-ul primit din partea piloților a fost pozitiv. Cu toate acestea, vrem să aducem o serie de modificări înainte ca mașina să fie omologată", a declarat Sven Smeets, directorul Volkswagen Motorsport.

Volkswagen Polo GTI R5 are un motor turbo de 1.6 litri cu patru cilindri care produce 272 de cai putere și 400 Nm. Resursele sunt gestionate de o cutie secvențială cu cinci rapoarte și de un sistem de tracțiune integrală. Mașina cântărește 1.320 de kilograme, iar accelerația de la 0 la 100 km/h are loc în 4.1 secunde.

"O mașină dedicată piloților privați trebuie să fie dezvoltată mult mai atent decât una gândită pentru o echipă de uzină", a completat Gerard Jan de Jongh, directorul tehnic al proiectului.

Pirelli Recreates Its Logo With 41 GT3 Racers At Monza Circuit

40 years ago, Pirelli assembled a bunch of cars in a giant P logo on the straight at Monza. The photoshoot yielded a television commercial. And it was the first to spawn a “making of” video to follow.

Now four decades later, Pirelli’s done it again. Only now they didn’t use run-of-the-mill road cars like they did in 1978. This time the Italian rubber company did it with GT3 racing cars.

That’s 22,000 Horsepower Right There

Pirelli brought out a total of 41 cars for the recreation. Together they stretched some 80 meters (over 260 feet) long and 18 meters (nearly 60 feet) tall. Among them were racers from Aston Martin, Audi, Bentley, BMW, Ferrari, Jaguar, Lamborghini, Lexus, McLaren, Mercedes-AMG, Nissan and Porsche. And between them, they had some 22,000 horsepower.

The event took place this past weekend at the end of a long day of competition at Monza. Each car was pushed into place by hand at sunset, and they all assembled on the legendary straight, where they typically reach speeds of 280 kilometers (174 miles) per hour.

The track on the outskirts of Milan is the home of Italian motorsports and the oldest circuit in continuous use in Europe. It’s also one of the oldest anywhere in the world, second only to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The Autodromo Nazionale serves as home to the Italian Grand Prix (both in F1 and MotoGP) as well as the 1,000 km of Monza endurance race, among others. The Blancpain GT Series (where this photoshoot was completed) races there as well, with Pirelli serving as its exclusive tire provider.

Looking at the original video and the new photos below, we can’t help but wonder what it’d look like in another 40 years from now.

Nico Rosberg has been enjoying his racing retirement since winning the 2016 Formula One World Championship and recently jumped behind the wheel of a McLaren P1 with another champion sitting next to him.

The owner of this P1 is none other than Mika Häkkinen and interestingly, it’s one of a handful of P1 experimental prototypes that were converted into production cars and sold to customers, so one could say it’s therefore even rarer than a “typical” P1.

As you probably know, the P1 is powered by a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 engine mated to an electric motor. All up, it delivers 903 HP to the rear wheels, making it a bit of a handful on the tight city streets of Monaco.

To get the best out of the hybrid hypercar, the duo headed up to the spectacular mountain rods above the tiny principality. Despite this being the first time Rosberg had driven a P1, he was able to quickly extract its full performance and even scared Häkkinen a little bit.

Introduced in 2013, the P1 was the pinnacle of the British brand’s range and its first hybrid model. It directly rivalled the Ferrari LaFerrari and Porsche 918 Spyder and later spawned the track-only GTR.

McLaren has confirmed that it will create a successor to the P1, but has yet to specify when we might expect such a model. We guess it won’t be that soon, as Woking has just launched the Senna and is already teasing the BP23 three-seater that will serve as the spiritual successor to the iconic F1.

Volvo Polestar’s Team Cyan Is Racing A Lotus Evora This Season (That’s Right, A Lotus)

Previously racing under the Polestar banner, the team now known as Cyan Racing has a long-standing association with Volvo. But this year it’s entering another kind of car: a Lotus.

Rechristened as Lotus Cyan Racing, the team will field an Evora GT4 in the Swedish GT series. And it’ll even wear the bright blue livery from which the team derives its name. Complete with the Swedish flag on the roof.

At this point, only the most astute observers may see the link. Chinese automaker Geely recently acquired a majority stake in Lotus (along with nearly half of its former parent company Proton). Geely is the same parent company that owns Volvo and Polestar (not to mention Lynk & Co, the London Taxi/EV Company, and a small stake in Daimler).
A Prince Behind The Wheel

To drive the Evora, Cyan has retained the services of Prince Carl Philip Bernadotte and Richard Göransson. The Duke of Värmland is the son of King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden. And he’s been competing in the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship with Volvo/Polestar/Cyan since 2013. His teammate Richard Göransson, with whom the prince will share the car, won the STCC with the same team in 2016.

“We are headed for the start of a new programme and a new season with great excitement,” said Alexander Murdzevski Schedvin, the former Volvo/Polestar motorsport chief, now named head of Geely Group Motorsport (under whose auspices the team will now race). “We are especially glad to continue our relationship with Prince Carl Philip who for this year will drive a new brand within the Geely Group in the form of Lotus. The pre-season tests have been very positive and we are looking forward to the season start.”


Look closely in the pictures and you’ll see another car or two under covers in the background. We’d bet those are the new tin-top racers that Cyan Racing will field in the STCC that runs alongside the GT series. But we’ll have to see what form those will take, since the old S60 is on its way out and the new one hasn’t debuted yet.

Pentru prima dată în istorie, Raliul Dakar, cea mai dură competiție de rally-raid din lume, se va desfășura exclusiv pe teritoriul statului Peru. Bolivia, Chile și Ecuador au decis să nu se implice în ediția din 2019.


Pentru prima dată în istorie, Raliul Dakar se va desfășura doar pe teritoriul unui singur stat. Ediția din 2019 a Raliului Dakar va începe în 6 ianuarie, iar concurenții vor avea de înfruntat 10 etape, toate acestea fiind organizate în Peru. Startul și finișul sunt programate în Lima, capitala Statului Peru.

Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO), organizatorul Raliului Dakar a sperat ca în 2019, cea mai dură competiție de rally-raid din lume să înceapă din Chile și să se încheie în Ecuador. De asemenea, organizatorii au avut discuții și cu reprezentanți din Bolivia, însă toate statele amintite anterior au decis să nu se implice.

"Din cauza nisipului și a dunelor suntem nevoiți să organizăm etape mai scurte, dar mai dificile. În aceste condiții este imposibil să pregătim etape speciale cu o lungime de 400 de kilometri", a declarat Etienne Lavigne, directorul raliului.

În ciuda faptului că anul viitor raliul se va organiza doar într-o singură țară, Lavigne este convins că geografia statului Peru o să atragă numeroși piloți cu experiență.

"Suntem convinși că vom atrage piloți de top din această disciplină. În fiecare an, Raliul Dakar este evenimentul de referință din rally-raid", a completat Lavigne.

McLaren has expressed interest in running a Le Mans 24 Hours program after discussions about next-generation LMP1 regulations.

Motorsport reports that the British automaker is one of many manufacturers shaping the regulations concerning the racers that will replace the current LMP1 class from 2020/21.

According to McLaren boss Zak Brown, they are seriously thinking about entering the top tier of the World Endurance Championship.

“We would definitely consider it. We are considering it. McLaren has a long history in additional forms of motorsport, whether that was CanAm, IndyCar, we’ve won Le Mans [in 1995, pictured top].

“And with the new regulations coming up for [the] World Endurance [Championship], we are participating in those meetings, and reviewing what that looks like. We’re a fan of the Le Mans brand. We would consider running the new, whatever they’re going to call it, GTP, silhouette, LMP1 – I’ve heard various phrases,” Brown said.

Brown added that key McLaren shareholders are fond of the idea, as long as the brand can be competitive.

The new regulations are expected to favor a more road car-based design than the current LMP1 rules. Previous reports have indicated that, if the rules allow it, McLaren could eventually race the Senna at Le Mans, but so far Woking has neither confirmed or denied it.

Porsche concurează la Le Mans alături de două exemplare 911 RSR îmbrăcate în "haine" celebre în motorsport: cursa de anduranță începe în 16 iunie

Porsche a pregătit patru exemplare 911 RSR pentru cursa de anduranță de 24 de ore de la Le Mans. Două dintre aceste exemplare au fost îmbrăcate în uniformele "Rothmans" și "Pink Pig", două "costume" celebre în motorsport.


Anul acesta, Porsche aniversează 7 decenii de la debutul lui 356, primul model sport din istoria mărcii. Pentru a celebra acest moment, Porsche a pregătit o mulțime de evenimente cu totul și cu totul speciale.

În cadrul cursei de 24 de ore de la Le Mans, Porsche a înscris patru exemplare 911 RSR. Până acum, nimic special, însă două dintre aceste mașini de uzină sunt îmbrăcate în uniforme celebre din motorsport.

Mașina cu numărul 91 poartă "hainele" Rothmans: caroserie vopsită în albastru și alb și accesorii roșii cu elemente aurii. Acest livery a debutat în 1982 pe un Porsche 956 C, un model care avea să facă furori atât la Le Mans, cât și pe circuitul german de la Nuburgring. Porsche 956 C s-a impus la Le Mans în 1982 și 1983, iar în 1986 și 1987, Porsche 962 C câștiga celebra cursă de anduranță. La volanul mașinii cu numărul 91 îi vom vedea pe Gianmaria Bruni (Italia), Richard Lietz (Austria) și Frederic Makowiecki (Franța).

Mașina cu numărul 92 va fi pilotată de Kevin Estre (Franța), Michael Christensen (Danemarca) și Laurens Vanthoor (Belgia). Exemplarul pregătit de constructorul german poartă uniforma "Pink Pig". Aceasta a fost admirată pentru prima dată în 1971 tot în cadrul cursei de 24 de ore de la Le Mans. Prototipul 917/20 a fost cel care a purtat acest livery și a reușit să fure inimile tuturor în timpul calificărilor.

Ediția din acest an a cursei de 24 de ore de la Le Mans se va desfășura în 16-17 iunie.

Premieră după aproape jumătate de secol: un echipaj românesc 100% feminin concurează într-un raliu din afara țării

Echipajul format din Cristiana Oprea și Diana Hațegan va concura în cadrul Rally Sliven din Bulgaria. Ultima prezență românească 100% feminină într-o competiție europeană a avut loc la finalul anilor '60.


În intervalul 27 - 29 iulie, în Bulgaria, are loc Rally Sliven, etapă care face parte din cadrul European Rally Trophy 2018. În cadrul competiției care se desfășoară la sud de Dunăre, România va fi reprezentată și de un echipaj 100% feminin: Cristiana Oprea și Diana Hațegan.

Cele două vor concura cu un exemplar Dacia Sandero 0.9 TCe dezvoltat special pentru astfel de competiții. Echipajul 100% feminin pășește pe drumul deschis la sfârșitul anilor '60 de Simina Mezincescu - Marta Miclescu.

"Căutând prin arhive, am realizat că o participare românească în această configurație nu a mai existat de aproape 50 de ani, lucru care ne onorează și ne responsabilizează față de generațiile următoare de sportivi care își doresc o carieră în automobilism. Ne dorim să marcăm această nouă etapă a oportunităților pentru femeile din motorsportul românesc", a declarat Cristiana Oprea.

În prezent, Cristiana concurează în cadrul Campionatului Național de Raliuri (CNR). A debutat în motorsport în 2015, iar în 2017 a reușit un sezon complet în cadrul CNR.

"Participarea la Sliven Rally este o nouă provocare pentru mine, pe care am acceptat-o bucuroasă. Abia aștept să descoperim probele speciale, să ne bucurăm de atmosfera unei etape europene și să evoluăm alături de noi concurenți. Obiectivul nostru la acest raliu este să creștem ritmul și să ne împingem încă puțin limitele", a completat Diana Hațegan.

În cadrul Rally Sliven, România va fi reprezentată și de piloții Vlad Cosma și Csongor Szabo.
