FIA Boss Doesn’t Expect New Engine Manufacturers In F1 Despite New Regs

Formula 1’s 2021 engine regulations were developed to bring new manufacturers to the sport, but despite that, the FIA isn’t expecting any newcomers.

The engine revamp was something manufacturers such as Porsche, Cosworth and Aston Martin were all keeping an eye out for. However, according to FIA president Jean Todt, no new engine manufacturers will enter the series.

In an interview with Autosport, Todt mentioned how one party (understood to be Porsche) was very serious about entering Formula 1, yet had recently suggested that it wouldn’t be able to do so.

“There was some demonstration of interest from one, who said to us we are not in a situation to commit for 2021, but what is very important for us is to know exactly what will be the regulations, because there could be a strong interest in the future,” stated Todt.

Right now, his priority is to ensure that the current engine suppliers Mercedes, Ferrari, Renault and Honda are all happy to continue and commit long-term to Formula 1.

“My priority is to make sure that we keep them four,” he said. “I always said it would be very unfair to the four engaged to say, ‘OK, we want to attract a new one so let’s change everything.’ But what about them? What about all the investment they have been doing for years and we say, we change completely the regulations because we may have one or two coming?”

“This is one of the reasons why it was not a revolution on the engine regulations.”

The FIA boss went on to say that he was never confident about F1 being able to attract more than four manufacturers as long as its engine rules were so different compared to other championships.

“I was always pessimistic to the fact that, with specific rules for F1, we could have more than four manufacturers. I feel personally it is really a great achievement to have four different powertrains for 10 teams – because it means 2.5 each.”

“So I was very skeptical. That is why I also asked to consider to have some common regulations in other championships because it would encourage other manufacturers, if you were able to have seven to 10 customers, to be able to buy the powertrain. But that has not happened.”

The Case For And Against Three-Car Formula One Teams

Breaking through in the world of Formula 1 isn’t as easy as some young drivers make it look, as there are still plenty of talented names left on the sidelines every year.

Youngsters such as F2 championship leader George Russell are in a bit of a limbo as Mercedes have failed to secure him an F1 seat for 2019 as of right now. Current Force India driver Esteban Ocon is in a similar situation, as his spot will likely go to Lance Stroll next season.

Of course, this could all be a non-issue if the FIA simply allowed for more cars to be placed on the grid.

The concept of three-car teams is nothing new. F1 has been toying with the idea for quite some time and back in the days of customer cars, like in the 60s and 70s, teams were lining up four or even five cars during races.

So then should this trend be allowed to cycle back? According to F2’s George Russell, who told Autosport that F1 is “currently lacking at least two teams”, it definitely should.

“We only have 20 cars on the grid, as a young driver trying to break into that 20 is extremely difficult,” said Russell. “I think the idea of a third car, or something along those lines, is a very good idea.”

“You sometimes see the pay drivers getting into Formula 1, and potentially they could come in for their home race: an Asian driver comes in for the Asian races, the American drivers come in for the American races and so on. It gives the likes of Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull the chance to throw their young drivers in without any major issues.”

Not so fast, George

On the opposite side of the spectrum are people such as Haas team principal Gunther Steiner, who thinks a third car would cause a distortion in the standings and confuse fans.

“I’m not in agreement with a third car because it would confuse the whole picture,” said Steiner. “It would be very difficult to understand for the fans and new spectators that sometimes a third car could run. It would distort the actual championship, in my opinion. I think we need to sit back and come up with a better idea.”

“As it stands, we have no interest to field a third car. If somebody comes up and pays for it, yes we can consider it.”

We actually understand where Steiner is coming from. A midfield team such as Haas would struggle to secure strong grid positions if it had to battle even more cars fielded by the likes of Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull. Financially though, it probably wouldn’t be that big of an issue, as George Russell will happily point out.

“Formula 1 is an extremely expensive sport because of the development, not because of the actual cost of building the front wings or whatever. The money is spent in the wind tunnels, on designers’ salaries, the time and effort to design the cars. To make three wings instead of two is not going to be a huge additional cost. [Or] a third chassis compared to two.”

In the end, this seems to be more of a competitive issue than a financial one. A young driver employed by Mercedes such as Russell would obviously love to find himself on the grid, behind the wheel of a Mercedes. But what if you’re trying to break through behind the wheel of a car that’s currently under-performing such as a Williams? You would have to fight through even more superior cars to get in the top 10.

In fact, you could argue that Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull could secure the top 9 positions during races with ease, barring any incidents. That doesn’t sound like a lot of fun, does it?

Vettel și Hamilton, cei mai rapizi în antrenamentele din Rusia. Verstappen, Ricciardo și Alonso, penalizați pe grilă

Sebastian Vettel și Lewis Hamilton au fost cei mai rapizi în antrenamentele de vineri din Rusia, în timp ce Daniel Ricciardo, Max Verstappen și Fernando Alonso vor fi penalizați pe grila de start.


Circuitul de la Soci găzduiește la sfârșitul acestei săptămâni Marele Premiu al Rusiei, ultima etapă desfășurată pe continentul european înainte de mutarea în Asia, America de Nord și America de Sud.

În prima sesiune de antrenamente, Sebastian Vettel a stabilit cel mai bun timp după ce l-a învins pe Max Verstappen cu numai 0.05 secunde, în condițiile în care ambii piloți au folosit pneuri de compoziție hypersoft.

Următoarele două poziții au fost ocupate de Mercedes prin Lewis Hamilton și Valtteri Bottas, însă amândoi au folosit cauciucuri de compoziție soft. Între timp, Daniel Ricciardo a terminat pe locul 5, însă a petrecut cea mai mare parte a sesiunii în garaj din cauza unei probleme la motorul Renault.

În cea de-a doua sesiune, cei de la Mercedes au început să-și arate colții și au stabilit timpul de referință prin Hamilton, care a fost cronometrat cu 1:33.385. Britanicul a fost cu două zecimi de secundă mai rapid decât coechipierul său Valtteri Bottas, în timp ce Red Bull și-a trecut în cont următoarele două poziții prin Verstappen și Ricciardo. De data aceasta a fost rândul celor de la Ferrari să ocupe locurile 5 și 6 prin Vettel și Raikkonen, la peste o jumătate de secundă în urma liderului.

Grila de start a Marelui Premiu al Rusiei va fi afectată puternic de 5 penalizări. Ricciardo și Verstappen vor fi retrogradați împreună cu Fernando Alonso, Pierre Gasly și Brendon Hartley pentru înlocuirea unor componente din cadrul unităților de propulsie.

Calificările pentru Marele Premiu al Rusiei vor avea loc sâmbătă la ora 15:00, în timp ce cursa de duminică este programată la ota 14:10.
