FIA Taps Citroën Motorsport Chief As World Rally Director
http://www.carscoops.com/2018/01/fia-ta ... ef-as.html
Citroën's replacing the director of its rally team - not because the incumbent hasn't been doing a good job. Quite the opposite: he's been tapped to oversee all rally activities for the FIA.
Yves Matton has been running Citroën Racing since 2011. He took over from Olivier Quesnel, who left to oversee racing activities for JN Holding - parent company to racing constructor Onroak Automotive (among others).
Matton oversaw the French automaker's rally program as well as its now-culminated foray into the World Touring Car Championship - which thrived more under his direction than the rally program did.
In his new capacity as FIA Rally Director, he'll be in charge of both the World Rally Championship and the Cross Country Rally World Cup (a primarily European championship for Baja-style rally raid events). He takes over the Jarmo Mahonen, former coordinator of Rally Finland, who is finishing his tenure in the position.
It's hardly unprecedented for a team leader to move into a top position at the FIA. The organization's current president Jean Todt was previously head of Scuderia Ferrari, and before that (coincidentally) as head of Peugeot's rally team.
Citroën has named Pierre Budar to replace Matton as the head of its motorsport department. Budar first joined the PSA Group in 1989, and has until now run its customer racing department.

IndyCar Reveals Its Sleek New Racer In Detroit
http://www.carscoops.com/2018/01/indyca ... er-in.html
The IndyCar Series is embarking on a new era, leaving behind the manufacturer-supplied aero kits and introducing a new common shape for the season ahead - and it unveiled the updated car at the Detroit Auto Show this week.
The revised chassis adopts a more striking “coke-bottle” shape, moving the sidepods forward (to offer better driver protection), lowering the floor, reducing the front wing, and removing some 35 pounds of weight from the tail.
The result is expected to put more onus on the drivers, with less downforce and weight to rely on.
“IndyCar is really looking to deliver on big promises,” said reigning series champion Josef Newgarden. “As you can see, it's bolder, it's more daring and, really, we believe it has improved aerodynamics that are going to help the racing product tremendously, so I'm looking forward to that probably the most.”
“There's quite a bit of engineering that's gone into the car. To me, it looks more like an Indy car should,” added Newgarden. “You think about the '80s and '90s, the ‘heyday' of INDYCAR racing, this is what you want to see from the product. We believe it's going to be faster. We believe it's going to be safer. It's going to provide better racing like we've talked about.”
The car will also be more cost-effective, noted team chief Roger Penske at the unveiling in Detroit. “We can take our existing chassis and put this aero kit on it and, instead of spending $400,000 or $500,000 for a car, these kits are somewhere between $100,000 and $200,000, and it gives us the ability to go to the next step,” Penske said. Combine that with a schedule less than half as demanding as NASCAR's, and the IndyCar Series presents a compelling option for prospective new entries.
Newgarden and Penske spoke at the unveiling alongside Indy chief Mark Miles, head of operations Jay Frye, and legendary driver Mario Andretti. “I certainly don't lack enthusiasm,” said Andretti, “and I hear a lot of positives. If there is a negative in all this, it's I don't have a ride yet” - to which Penske responded, “I'll have a seat for you tomorrow, OK?”
The season kicks off in St Petersburg, Florida, on March 11. The series will be back in Detroit at Belle Isle in early June.

Alfa Romeo Could Enter IndyCar Next
https://www.carscoops.com/2018/01/alfa- ... ycar-next/
Alfa Romeo has relaunched itself in the US market, and is returning to Formula One with Sauber next season. So what's next for the storied Italian marque?
IndyCar, potentially. Motorsport.com reports on a conversation between Sergio Marchionne and an Italian journalist at the Detroit Auto Show this past week wherein the Fiat Chrysler chief mooted the possibility.
“Why not Alfa Romeo in IndyCar? We are thinking about it,” said Marchionne. “Gian Paolo Dallara - I consider him a great, the best Italian engineer around.”
Marchionne was referring to the legendary racecar constructor that supplies the chassis for the IndyCar Series, and which is headquartered at the same Varano circuit in northern Italy that Alfa Romeo calls home. Dallara helped Alfa engineer both the 4C and 8C - its most serious sports cars in decades. It's also contributed to numerous Ferrari and Maserati road-car and racing programs.
“Over the last several months, particularly since our 2017 season ended, we have had numerous meetings with OEMs about the prospects of becoming partners with IndyCar,” IndyCar racing chief Jay Frye told Motorsport.com at the unveiling of the newly repackaged chassis in Detroit. “We've had around 10 of them - some initial meetings, some follow-ups.”
Frye would neither confirm nor deny that Alfa Romeo or FCA could be among them. However both Chevy and Honda (the two manufacturers currently supplying engines to the series) are reportedly keen to welcome a third automaker into the series.
Alfa Romeo last competed in IndyCar between 1989 and 1991, adapting Ferrari's aborted program, but never scored a pole position, race win, or even a podium finish.

Danica Teams Back Up With GoDaddy For Final Indy & Daytona 500
https://www.carscoops.com/2018/01/danic ... ytona-500/
After over a decade on the grid, Danica Patrick is soon to mark her retirement from professional racing. But before she does, she's planning two grand farewells - and she's doing it with her old sponsor GoDaddy.com.
The website giant first sponsored Danica at the start of her career in 2006, and was with her when she became the first woman to win an IndyCar race in 2008, and the first to take pole position at the Daytona 500 in 2013.
The driver and her longtime sponsor had since parted ways, but will rekindle their partnership for this year's Daytona 500 and Indianapolis 500. They'll also stick together as Patrick - the only woman to have led laps at both those races - leaves her motorsport career behind to focus on other ventures. Danica has her own line of clothing called Warrior, a California vineyard called Somnium, and recently launched a fitness book entitled Pretty Intense.
“This is definitely the way I want to finish my racing career - at these two iconic races, backed by my iconic, long-time sponsor,” said Patrick. “GoDaddy was there for me when my career was just really starting so it's exciting to be getting back in the GoDaddy ‘green' for my final two races. Our brands have always been powerful together, and I think it's awesome to have them at my side when I go ‘all in' with my businesses after racing.”
“You could say, ‘we're getting the band back together,'” said GoDaddy's Barb Rechterman. “It makes sense in that our goals are so well-aligned - she's passionate, tenacious and creative just like so many of our customers who are also looking to leverage the power of the Internet and turn their ‘side hustle' into a full-time business. Danica absolutely epitomizes the heart of our GoDaddy customers. We love it.”

Toyota Gazoo Announces New GT86 Trophy Competition In Europe
https://www.carscoops.com/2018/01/toyot ... on-europe/
Toyota Gazoo Racing is expanding its European activities with the introduction of a new Trophy Competition for drivers of GT86 rally and race cars.
The new Trophy is open to owners of both the GT86 CS-V3 and CS-Cup race cars, as well as those of the GT86 CS-R3 rally car.
And since Gazoo Racing wanted their new Trophy Competition to be as flexible as possible, it allows cars that can be entered in more than one competition series in Europe and earn trophy points based on the size of the grid and the level of competition.
The final standings of the new Trophy series will be determined by the ten best results from each competitor within the 2018 season. The winner gets €35,000 as a prize and a Toyota CH-R. Second and third places are rewarded with €25,000 and €20,000 respectively.
“The Toyota Gazoo Racing Trophy is an exciting project that brings together a large number of competitors from different disciplines to compete for the title,” said Emanuele Battisti, TMB Customer Motorsport Project Leader. “Combining race and rally cars in the same competition is a very interesting aspect to the competition and we believe this will create excitement for both participants and fans.”
Toyota Motorsport expects plenty of competitors already taking part in the VLN, RCN, and Nurburgring 24 Hours to join their newfound Trophy, as well as people racing in the Tour European Rally Series, the German Rally Championship and the FIA European Rally Championship.
The highest possible score per event is 75, which is available for victory in a class with more than five cars in a 24-hour race, or rally event with 200km (124 miles) or more of special stages.
Prizes will be awarded to competitors who enter a minimum of five events, from January 1, 2018 to November 30, 2018. More details about the scoring system and prizes can be found at Toyota Motorsport's dedicated website.

Carloz Sainz Jr's Following His Dad's Footsteps In Rallye Monte Carlo
https://www.carscoops.com/2018/01/carlo ... nte-carlo/
Carlos Sainz Jr has big racing shoes to fill. His namesake father won the World Rally Championship twice, and just added his second Dakar Rally trophy to his cabinet. But Junior is trying hard - plus, he's still young…
The 23-year-old Spaniard is set to return for his fourth season in F1 this year, driving for the Renault F1 team, but before the 2018 championship kicks off , he'll drive the final stage of the Rallye Monte Carlo.
Mind you, he will not compete in the race; instead, he will be driving a new Megane RS as the 00 course car that'll clear the way for the competitors to follow. Still, it'll give him a chance to experience first-hand the rally that his father won three times in the 1990s.
“I'm really looking forward to experiencing Rallye Monte Carlo for the first time,” said Sainz. “I've heard so much about it from my dad - how difficult the stages are, how the conditions can change in an instant from snow to rain or bright sunshine and of course how you need nerves of steel for some of those mountain passes and hairpins!”
Fortunately, his ride, though designed for the road, should to be up to the task. Revealed just this past fall in Frankfurt, the new Megane RS boasts a 1.8-liter turbo four with 280 horsepower and a new four-wheel steering system. After playing rally ace in Monaco, it will probably try to reclaim the front-drive lap record at the Nürburgring, a prize several of its own predecessors have held before, and which now belongs to the Honda Civic Type R.
The younger Sainz won titles in both classes of Formula Renault on his way up the ladder before signing with Scuderia Toro Rosso. His best finish so far was fourth place at Singapore last year in the STR12, only a few races before he was traded to the team that supplied its engines.
Even with the best tutor, his new team might prove hesitant to let its new hot-shoe dabble in rallying competitively. That's understandable since the same team earlier this decade gave Robert Kubica permission to race in rallies in the off-season, and he ended up seriously injured. That left the team without its star driver, and Kubica's only now returning to Formula 1, as a test/reserve driver for Williams). On the other hand, Kimi Raikkonen didn't seem to have much trouble switching back and forth between the two disciplines, competing in the World Rally Championship before returning to F1 with Lotus (as the same team was then branded). But then, he's Finnish, and driving on slippery surfaces is second nature to him.

Ayrton Senna's Monaco-Winning McLaren MP4/8A To Be Auctioned Off In May
https://www.carscoops.com/2018/01/ayrto ... d-off-may/
The late Ayrton Senna is considered by many as the greatest Formula 1 driver of all time, and anything that bears his names sells for an absurd amount of money. A few years ago, Senna's first-ever Formula 1 car crossed the block, and now, the final McLaren he competed in is heading to Bonhams.
The Formula 1 car, which wears chassis number six, helped Senna claim his sixth victory in Monaco. The chassis was also used in seven other races during the 1993 season, which saw Senna finish in second place overall behind Alain Prost.
The racecar, which is powered by a HB Cosworth V8 that was supplied by Ford, features a high-tech active suspension system. And there's the gorgeous Marlboro livery that has become synonymous to McLaren's golden era and one of the most iconic in Formula 1 history.
Bonhams claims the McLaren MP4/8A is in “startlingly well-preserved, running-order.” While it would be awesome to see the new buyer take the Formula 1 car to a track day, this probably won't happen. This is a collector's item and will probably be locked away for a long, long time.
The auction takes place on May 11 at Bonham's sale in Monaco. The British auction house didn't provide a ballpark estimate for the vehicle, but we're sure it will go for well over the seven-figure mark. With Michael Schumacher's Ferrari F2001 crossing the block for $7.5 million late last year, we're sure someone will put up even more money for Senna's car.
For those of us that don't have large enough bank accounts to even dream about purchasing the Formula 1 car, the clip below provides a recap of what went down during the '93 Gran Prix de Monaco.
